After seven years of running the REEL ROCK Film Tour with our partners at Sender Films, we’re proud to announce the launch of the REEL ROCK TV SERIES, with 9 half-hour episodes for 2013.

Tomorrow, Wednesday Jan 23, REEL ROCK drops in the US on OUTSIDE TV at 9:30 Eastern. The first episode is La Dura Dura, featuring Chris Sharma and Adam Ondra’s battle to climb the world’ first 5.15c.

Witness The Fitness

Yesterday Daniel Woods made the second repeat of Chris Sharma’s mega roof problem, Witness The Fitness, in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas. We filmed Chris’ first ascent back in 2005 and it was featured in Dosage Volume III. It’s a nearly 40 foot long horizontal roof that was one of the wildest pieces of rock we’d ever seen climbed, and Chris’ hardest problem at the time.

The following year, Fred Nicole made two trips from Switzerland and broke several holds, but eventually repeated the problem, calling it the hardest in that style he’d ever done. Since 2006 the rumor has been that after several more holds broke, the line was no longer possible. But Daniel Woods, Jimmy Webb, and Paul Robinson had heard otherwise, and went to check it out.

On day one they solved the crux, with completely different beta than Chris. And on Day 3 Daniel sent. He thinks it’s “solid V15″ and the best roof he’s ever done. Fresh from a recent stint sportclimbing at the Red River Gorge, Daniel credited his newfound endurance for the quick success.

To celebrate the fact that this spectacular problem still goes, we posted the first ascent video on the Big UP YouTube channel, and we should have the send footage from Daniel soon as well – will be really interesting to see how different it climbs now !

If you’ve seen the original Ozarks Dose from D3 you may also remember The Full Package – an incredible V13 / 14 prow that Chris put up on the same trip. The day after Witness, Daniel also got the first repeat of that one. He’s got some serious momentum…

Ashima: Return of the Warrior Ninja Princess

We’ve been keeping up with Ashima Shiraishi’s incredible climbing career for several years now. We first featured her in our YouTube short The Insiders when she was just 8 years old. The following year she starred in our multi-award-winning film, Origins: Obe and Ashima. Now we’re happy to roll out a brand new short that was shot and edited by Jason Kehl, featuring Ashima’s return to Hueco Tanks, and her incredible ascent of the classic V13, Crown of Aragorn, at the age of 10. Now that temps are dropping and Hueco season is upon us, we hope this short gets you fired up!

Switzerland Shoot

We just wrapped a big shoot in Switzerland with Ueli Steck for a future REEL ROCK Film. Ueli has spent the last year or so learning how to fly a paraglider with the idea in mind of using it to descend from high peaks and to climb multiple peaks in a day. The modern gliders are so light and compact that he is able to carry his entire kit on his back while he speed-solos a mountain, then bust it out on the summit, and if the wind allows, fly down to the base of the next peak and keep on climbing… Here are some behind the scenes images from our efforts to tell the story of Ueli’s new direction.

New Site

It’s been long overdue, but we are very happy to finally roll out the new Big UP website. We’ve gone back and revamped everything, including launching many of our older films as downloads for the first time ever. Next we’ll work on a way to keep all of our old blog posts, going back several years, live and accessible somewhere… don’t want that stuff lost to history. Many thanks to the awesome team at Mapleton Hill Media for building the new site. Let us know what you think, and any additions you would like to see !
